If one Australian festival was to take over the world as the British/American Hallowe’en has this year, which one should it be? Cockroach races? Todd River Regatta, which is run on legs in a dry river bed by contestants wearing beer-can boats? The People’s Republic of Woodford, largest folk fest in the southern hemisphere? Billycart races? Surf carnivals? Barunga Festival?

Cane toad races at the Storey Bridge Hotel? Nah, that’s just silly.

The beer-can regatta in Darwin was turned into the milk carton regatta (wowsers, PC brigade, nanny state cliche cliche etc) but there was a pub near Howard Springs that held snail races, and one I remember in north Qld that had a cockroach race.
We’re a classy country.

Not the I am knowledgeable in such matters, but I vote for the cockroach races having seen the excellence of this activity in Texas which is inhabited by that great species of cockroach known as the German cockroach.

Rollerball… minus James Caan.
